Northern Gannet Portrait (Morus bassanus)

The gannets are returning to Bempton Cliffs from their winter areas. This could be around the Bay of Biscay or even further South with first year juveniles heading to the West Coast of Africa.
They are the UK's largest seabird with a wingspan of almost 6 feet, and Bempton Cliffs will see over 13,000 breeding pairs arriving for the season. In fact the UK hosts around 56% of the world's northern gannet population with 3% of those at Bempton Cliffs.
I took this photograph a couple of days ago, in strong winds, with gannets gliding past the cliffs. This one got too close to get the whole body in shot, but I think it makes a good portrait with the left wing framing the head.
