Norrsunda kyrka

            Norrsunda church is a parish church in Norrsunda parish in Uppsala diocese. It is one of Uppland's four so-called east tower churches, which means that the tower is placed in the east, above the chancel and altar. The gray stone core church with its eastern tower was completed in the latter part of the 12th century. There was probably a church on the site before. The chancel with the apse and the tower, as well as 2/3 of the nave, are original. The inner ceiling of the chancel probably had a vault, while the inner ceiling of the nave was a flat wooden roof. It was not until the beginning of the 15th century that vaults were built in the nave. Around 1450, the nave was extended to the west and on the south side of this extension, an armory was built at the end of the 15th century. The sacristy may be contemporary with the armory because the sacristy and the armory have the same type of vault. Possibly the sacristy may be older than the armory, but that their vaults were added at the same time.

In 1633, the Sparre family tomb choir was added on the south side of the nave. The chancel is in red brick and was built by Ebba Oxenstierna after her husband Johan Sparre. The sandstone gable above is divided by columns, pilasters and niches. In the middle of the gable is a memorial plaque flanked by statues symbolizing Faith and Hope.

The tower got its current hood during the first half of the 19th century. Originally, the church bells hung in the tower. In the tower vault you can see holes for the ropes for the bells. In the 17th century, a free-standing wooden belfry was built just west of the church. In 1804, the stack got its current appearance.

The church was restored in 1902 and 1954.

Tornet fick sin nuvarande huv under 1800-talets första hälft. Ursprungligen hängde kyrkklockorna i tornet. I tornvalvet kan man se hål för repen till klockorna. På 1600-talet byggdes en fristående klockstapel i trä strax väster om kyrkan. 1804 fick stapeln sitt nuvarande utseende.

Kyrkan restaurerades 1902 samt 1954.
