Notes: Below are a few brief extracts for some background information on St. Paul's Episcopal Church, often referred to as the "Cathedral of the Confederacy." The first is from the NPS.gov website and the second is from an article in the Washington D.C. paper, Evening Star, of April 8, 1865. This article shows that the oft-repeated story of Jefferson Davis receiving the bad news of Petersburg's fall, while sitting in church at St. Paul's, had made its way North and into the newspapers the very same week. The last extract is from the Richmond papers of another funeral that Jefferson Davis attended at St. Paul's eleven months before.

"St. Paul’s has served as a house of worship for some of the South’s most famous citizens including Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and many of Virginia’s governors. During the morning service at St. Paul’s on April 2, 1865, President Davis received word that General Lee and the Confederate army were on the brink of defeat at Petersburg, Virginia. Thus began the infamous evacuation of Richmond and subsequent fire that would destroy much of the city. This is just one of the many historical associations that make the church one of the South’s most significant landmarks."

“The Public Buildings of Richmond.

The headquarters of rebeldom were concentrated around Capital square, and it is a striking fact that the first object that met the eyes of Jefferson Davis when he came out of St. Paul's Church on Sunday, April 2, 1865, with the news from Lee that all was lost, and he must leave Richmond, was the statue of Washington, under which he had been inaugurated as "President of the Confederate States," February 22, 1862.

St. Paul's Church, on Ninth street, was the church of President Davis, who is regarded here as a sincerely devout member of the Episcopal communion. It is a large and comely structure; the congregation made up of the “best society" of Richmond; and the rector a German by birth, but long resident here. A good many notable funerals have taken place in this church, including that of President Tyler, but the most notable of all in history will be the hasty "carrying out, feet foremost," of the "southern confederacy” by Jefferson Davis, on Sunday afternoon, April 2, 1865.”

Richmond, VA., Monday Morning, May 2, 1864

“Fatal Accident – A Son of President Davis Killed by a Fall - A most distressing accident occurred at the President’s Mansion on Saturday afternoon last. About five o'clock Joseph E. Davis, about four years old, son of President Davis, who had been playing about the yard during the earlier part of the evening, was missed, when search was instituted, and in a short time he was found lying in an insensible condition on the brick area below the east portico of the residence, with his left thigh broken and a severe contusion on his forehead…….The exact cause of the unfortunate accident is not known; but as there was a step-ladder leading from the area in the yard to the porch above, a distance of from fifteen to twenty feet, it is conjectured that he was standing near its top, and, losing his balance, fell over into the yard below. The funeral took place at five o’clock yesterday afternoon, from St. Paul’s Church. A large crowd of sympathizing friends were in attendance, and the ceremonies were of the most impressive character.”
