Sunrise at Hangman's - a photo on Flickriver

            After a dazzling, pre-sunrise display of color in the sky, the sun finally breaks over the horizon as D&RG Locomotive #168 rumbles across Ferguson's Trestle (aka "Hangman's Trestle") at MP 285.87, with a westbound San Juan Express headed for Chama, NM via Cumbres Pass.   

The train featured here is the newest addition to the Cumbres & Toltec's impressive stable of locomotives and rolling stock.  And for the first time, a C&TS train features historic passenger and baggage cars that are indigenous to the line.   As most fans know, the regular tourist cars that operate daily between Chama and Antonito were built during the tourist era on flat car and box car frames.   The two passenger cars and the RPO featured on this special  train all date back to the late 1,800s and are actual D&RG pieces.   They were restored over  the last several years in the Antonito Yard, by the C&TS Special Projects Group.   The same is true for the locomotive, which is an 1883-vintage D&RG T-12, 10-wheeler.   The 168 was pulled out of a public display in Colorado Springs and was also restored by the C&TS, on site in Antonito.   This historic train is now in service, operating out of Antonito, not on the regular tourist trains, but rather, on special dinner trips that turn in Osier, CO.
