Stonework detail

Accessed via a bridge over an empty moat, and then through the remains of a gatehouse connected to a circle of ramparts, the stone keep or castle of Castle Rising was built c1140 by William D’Albini.

It has been a hunting lodge, royal residence, and in the C18th, home to a person with mental health issues.

It's most famous resident was Queen Isabella from 1331 - 1358. After 1397 it largely fell into disrepair. In 1544 the castle came into the ownership of the Howard family, the Dukes of Norfolk, who still own it today.
