The Devonshire Dock Hall – or DDH – is the centre of Barrow-in-Furness’s submarine building industry, where BAE Systems have built the Vanguard-class subs and are currently constructing the Astute class boats.

Built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited (VSEL) in 1986, it stands at 51m tall – the tallest building in Cumbria and dominant over the town’s skyline.

Constructed over the top of the Devonshire Dock itself, the assembly facility covers 25,000 square metres and allows subs to be rolled out and lowered into the water without the need for a slipway.

 Up to four submarines can stand inside at any one time, with each at different stages of their construction and design. They are then rolled out – through supposedly the biggest doors in Europe – and launched.

Barrow-in-Furness’s Dock Museum is built into an old dock and has been home to the town’s museum since 1994.

The exhibits revolve around the history of the town and the area – including the iron, steel and shipbuilding industries – and include an lifeboat – the RNLB Herbert Leigh – which rises above a wave-like exterior wall.

The dock was built in 1872 as part of the town’s shipbuilding industry and the museum for the town dates back more than a century, having moved from Barrow’s library.
