PRR Kouts Depot - a photo on Flickriver

PRR Kouts Depot

            I thought I would post a few photos of Kouts, Indiana that I have collected over the years with some information along with it.  Kouts was originally set up by Barnhardt Kouts (Kautz) as a village at the junction of the Erie and Pennsylvania (Panhandle) railroads. Soon after in 1865, the first post office was formed and by 1881 there were about 500 people who called Kouts home. Besides offering residents the benefits of being a station for two railroads, the Kouts area was also important to early settlers for its abundant fish and furs due to the nearby Kankakee River.  Official records show that the town was originally named Kouts Station in 1867, then changed to Kout in 1882 and finally Kouts in 1890.  It was incorporated in 1921, when electricity first came into town.  

Kouts Interlocking Tower, "DN", was located at the crossing of the PRR (nee-PCC&St.L, Chicago to Logansport Line) and the Erie (nee-Chicago & Erie, nee-Chicago & Atlantic, Chicago to Jersey City line) and was controlled by the PRR.  After 1948, Kouts also remotely controlled the Erie's Wilders "DR" Interlocking, where the Erie crossed the Monon's Michigan City branch.  

In this photo taken July 15th, 1908, PRR Kouts depot is shown.  Depot sat about 12 poles west of the tower on the same side (North) of the PRR tracks.  I am assuming the outside tracks here are the mains.  Photographer is unknown.
