Chicago and Northwestern GP7 1634 Washburn WI 5-28-1970

            Here's a RARE gem of the CNW. This shot shows GP7 1634 with a southbound freight at Washburn, WI in May 1970. I can't quite pinpoint where this exactly is, but I'm thinking the south side of Washburn. This local ran from Spooner north through Hayward and on to Ashland. If there was a need, the local would run to Washburn and Bayfield. This train is short with a CN boxcar, an empty flat, a flatcar with some kind of wire spools, a gondola of pulpwood and a waycar(caboose). In 1970 I think DuPont was still running so the big spools could be from there or possibly the Washburn foundry. If I have this right, DuPont closed down in 1971 and the CNW petitioned the ICC for abandonment in 1975 for this line. The Northwestern used to run this local with a Geep/Slug set in the mid 70s. That power was brought to Spooner by a southbound freight from Superior on Friday afternoons. Then this local ran on the weekends and the Slug set was brought back to Superior on Sunday or Monday morning.
