Ce pont de 3 km dont 2 au dessus du Tage est construit de 1962 à 1966 et inauguré sous le nom de « Pont de Salazar ». Il gardera ce nom jusqu'au 25 avril 1974, jour de la Révolution des Oeillets entraînant la chute de la dictature salazariste. À cette date et en mémoire à cet événement historique, le pont de Lisbonne prit son nom définitif de « Ponte 25 de abril ».

Il fut d'abord un pont autoroutier à cinq voies puis également un pont ferroviaire lorsqu'une voie de chemin de fer y fut ajoutée sur son tablier inférieur.

Il rappelle étrangement le Golden Gate Bridge de San Francisco, la ressemblance est dûe aux critères sismiques pris en compte lors de leur construction (Séisme de Lisbonne en 1755).
