Shiprock Pinnacle, New Mexico

Rising almost 1600 feet from desert plain in the Navajo Nation, Shiprock Pinnacle is an ancient volcanic neck that is the most prominent landmark in northwestern New Mexico. The massive rock formation is a remnant of a volcanic throat that was originally formed far below the earth's surface. Over millions of years it was exposed through erosion of softer surrounding material. Wall-like sheets of minette, known as dikes, radiate away from the central formation (the southern dike rises in the left half of this image).

For the Navajo, the formation is known as Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "rock with wings". In their prayers for blessing, they speak of Walking in Beauty, a reference to encountering your fears, overcoming them, and then pursuing life in joy and harmony. Sunset at the Pinnacle evokes these strong impressions of both the drama and peace of life.
