            Glaucous gulls are the dominant gull species around Utqiagvik at this time of year, and the dainty Ross's gulls and black-legged kittiwakes are dwarfed by these pale giants. In fact, glaucous gulls are the second-largest gull in the world, and take full advantage of that size to be big bullies in the bird world. During the summer nesting season, they routinely eat other birds eggs and will even eat adult shorebirds and seabirds if they get the opportunity. Fish, crabs, clams and kelp are also on their dinner list, along with lemmings, carrion and any edible trash they find to dine on.
