common eiders near Utqiagvik AK 116A9091

            It was quite a sight to see all the common eiders migrating south while I was doing seawatches at Utqiagvik. In the three days I was there, I saw nearly 3000 common eiders pass by. After nesting on the tundra near the Arctic Ocean here, these common eiders will spend the winter along the coast of southern Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Common eiders don't have any trouble staying warm in this cold climate since they are famous for their insulating down that makes a light and warm filling for jackets, quilts, sleeping bags, and if you have the extra cash an eiderdown duvet.
