Palestine Railways - Lydda Junction in August 1945 - USATC 2-8-2 steam locomotive

            In the second half of 1942, the USA started to supply locomotives to the British Middle East Command. By December of that year, 27 USATC class S200 2-8-2 (Mikado) locomotives were working the Palestine Railways long-haul route to Egypt, as well as the Haifa, Beirut and Tripoli main line to western Lebanon.

At least 85 S200s operated in the Middle East, including Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon. One locomotive was destroyed by fire at El Arish in 1942. 29 locomotives of this batch were later supplied to Turkey, where they became TCDD class 46. 

In 1946, another 24 were added to the same series (TCDD 46201–46253). 51 S200s, built in 1942, served on the Trans Iranian Railway, where they became Iranian class 42. Two of the Turkish locomotives survive. 46224 is at Ankara and 46244 is at the Çamlık Railway Museum.

After the Allied invasion of Italy, 31 S200s were transferred to Europe. Thirty of these locomotives entered Italian rolling stock as FS class 747 (Nos. 747.001–747.030). One locomotive was burnt down.

In this August 1945 photo, a USATC 2-8-2 steam locomotive is seen at the head of an express train from Cairo to Haifa.
