Winter Study (2): Antietam Creek Aqueduct

            On the C&O Canal at mile mark 69.36 where Antietam Creek flows into the Potomac River.

The 140 foot long aqueduct was constructed in 1832-35 from limestone in a nearby quarry.

On September 17, 1862 the waters of this creek ran red from blood spilled 4 miles upstream at the Battle of Sharpsburg/Antietam, the bloodiest single day of the U.S. Civil War.  And the single bloodiest day in U.S. military history: 22,717 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing.

On July 6, 1864 during Jubal Early's invasion of Maryland,  Confederate forces blasted down the berm (upstream) wall of the aqueduct down into the arches and removed the ringstone.  On the towpath (downstream) side, the Confederates tore out a large portion of the aqueduct wall.  The aqueduct was rebuilt in 1864 and vertical iron rods were installed for support.
