Of the free and of the brave - a photo on Flickriver

            Macugnaga. Italy. 

This is the deep valley of Mondelli, with the summits of Battel, on the left, and Joderhorn.
The valley ends up at Mondelli Pass, 2840m (9,360ft), on the borderline with Switzerland. Mondelli Pass was one of the routes mostly used by smugglers ‘till the 70s of the last century. The industrialization was spreading like a desease in the big plane, and the people living in this area of the Alps had only two choices: move in a big city and work in a factory, or struggle to stay here; and smuggling was their way of fighting. 
They crossed this pass in every season, gaining two thousands meter of elevation (6,500ft) with heavy backpacks. 
There have been a lot of acts of solidariety between them and the soldiers watching over the border; they fought against each other, but they were united against the hostile environment.

Questo è il vallone di Mondelli, con le vette del Battel, a sinistra, e dello Joderhorn.
La valle termina al Passo Mondelli, al confine con la Svizzera. Il passaggio di Mondelli è stato uno dei percorsi più utilizzati dai contrabbandieri fino agli anni '70 del secolo scorso. L'industrializzazione stava diffondendo come una malattia e le persone che vivevano in questa zona delle Alpi avevano solo due possibilità: passare in una grande città o lottare per rimanere qui, e il contrabbando era il loro modo di combattere. Hanno attraversato questo passaggio in ogni stagione, guadagnando duemila di metri di altitudine con pesanti zaini. Ci sono stati molti atti di solidarietà tra loro e i gendarmi che sorvegliavano il confine; erano l'uno contro l'altro, ma erano uniti contro l'ambiente ostile
