Lowndes Mausoleum

A chaste neo-classical mausoleum having pedimented gables and shallow pitched roof. Smooth ashlar walls with simple plinth course, pilasters and eaves course. Tudor arch-headed doorway to principal elevation with timber single-leaf door having decorative strap hinges.  Semi-circular light to principal elevation having wrought-iron insert, semi-circular window to corresponding rear elevation.

History

Charles Lowndes of Chesham (d.1783) was the son of William (‘Ways and Means’) Lowndes (1652-1724) who was Secretary to the Treasury in the 17th and early 18th century. William was born in Winslow, Buckinghamshire and, having lived there all his life, was buried in the family vault in Winslow church. He was married four times. Charles was one of the seven sons (there were also seven daughters) born to William’s fourth wife, Rebecca. Charles, like his father, became Secretary to the Treasury. He lived at The Bury in Chesham, a house dated 1712, and built the mausoleum in 1740. Correspondence held in the Buckinghamshire Record Office suggests that the mausoleum may have been extended in 1857 by a later descendant of the family, another William Lowndes.
