Basilique Saint-Sébastien-hors-les-Murs Rome

            La basilique est dédiée au IXe siècle à saint Sébastien (martyr romain populaire du IIIe siècle). Les reliques de Sébastien sont placées dans l’église autour de 350. Elles sont transférées à Saint-Pierre en 826, juste avant une attaque sarrasine au cours de laquelle l’église est détruite. Le bâtiment est reconstruit sous le pontificat de Nicolas Ier (858-867), tandis que l’autel du martyr est consacré par Honorius III, à la demande des Cisterciens à qui l’église est consacrée. L’édifice actuel est en grande partie du XVIIe siècle, la construction, commandée par le cardinal Scipione Borghese en 1609, est de Flaminio Ponzio et, après la mort de celui-ci en 1613, confiée à Vasanzio Giovanni. La sculpture de Saint Sébastien sur l'autel, dans la première chapelle à gauche, est de Antonio Giorgetti. La chapelle des reliques abrite une pierre portant les présumées traces de pas de Jésus liées à l'épisode de Quo vadis des apocryphes Actes de Pierre, et une des flèches qui ont frappé saint Sébastien avec une partie de la colonne à laquelle il a été lié au cours du martyre. La chapelle Albani, construite en 1716[4], conçue par Carlo Maratta, Alessandro Specchi, Filippo Barigioni et Carlo Fontana, est commandée par le pape Clément XI et dédiée au pape Fabien, évêque de Rome durant la persécution de Dèce. Flanquant l'autel, des bustes des saints Pierre et Paul par Nicolò Cordier rappellent la première dédicace de la basilique.

The basilica is dedicated to the ninth century to St. Sebastian (popular Roman martyr of the third century). The relics of Sebastian are placed in the church around 350. They are transferred to St. Peter in 826, just before a Saracen attack in which the church is destroyed. The building was rebuilt under the pontificate of Nicholas I (858-867), while the altar of the martyr is consecrated by Honorius III, at the request of the Cistercians to whom the church is consecrated. The current building is largely from the seventeenth century, the construction, commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in 1609, is from Flaminio Ponzio and, after the death of it in 1613, entrusted to Vasanzio Giovanni. The sculpture of San Sebastian on the altar, in the first chapel on the left, is by Antonio Giorgetti. The chapel of the relics houses a stone bearing the alleged footprints of Jesus related to the episode of Quo vadis apocryphs Acts of Peter, and one of the arrows that struck Saint Sebastian with part of the column to which he was linked during martyrdom. The Albani Chapel, built in 1716 [4], designed by Carlo Maratta, Alessandro Specchi, Filippo Barigioni and Carlo Fontana, is commissioned by Pope Clement XI and dedicated to Pope Fabian, Bishop of Rome during the persecution of Decius. Flanking the altar, busts of Saints Peter and Paul by Nicolò Cordier recall the first dedication of the basilica.
