Mucha’s Stained Glass

This Alphonse Mucha’s Stained Glass depicts Saints Cyril and Methodius, the two Byzantine brothers who were missionaries to the Slavs in the 9th century. They are credited with developing the Glagolitic alphabet (the precursor to Cyrillic) and introducing Christian liturgy in the Slavic language. This act symbolized the awakening of Slavic cultural identity and autonomy. The window was created in 1931, during the First Czechoslovak Republic, a time when Czech national identity was being reasserted after centuries of Habsburg rule. The work reflects Mucha's dream of a unified, enlightened Slavic people, spiritually and culturally sovereign.
