Mundaring Weir

            Situated in the hills 40km east of Perth, Mundaring Weir was built between 1898 and 1903 to impound the Helena River. It was constructed to supply water to Kalgoorlie which was then undergoing a tremendous gold boom. 

The water was pumped by steam power via eight intermediate pumping stations which raised the water the 393 metre height difference between the dam and Kalgoorlie,  557km away!

Although it's a dam by any definition, for some reason it's always been known as Mundaring Weir.
