            In nature, the range of the species covers the Black Sea coast.
In the Caucasus, it occurs from sea level to an altitude of 2300 m in the subalpine zone, in the Crimea it rises to 1360 m. Forms extensive forests.
It is very shade-tolerant, therefore it is renewed under the canopy of different forests. It grows slowly, especially in the first 30 years. Able to give stump shoots. Lives up to 500 years
The tree's natural range extends from southeastern Bulgaria's Strandja mountain, through northwest Turkey, and east to the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia and Russia, to the Alborz Mountains in Iran.
