Berlin, Invalidenfriedhof: Blick durch eine Lücke in der Friedhofsmauer zur Europacity - Berlin, Invalids' Cemetery: Looking through a gap in the cemetery wall to the newly built "Europacity"

Der Berlin-Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal zwischen dem Friedhof und dem gegenüberliegenden Ufer bildete hier die Grenze zwischen Ost und West während der Teilung Berlins von 1961-1990.

Der 1748 angelegte Friedhof war einst Teil des Invalidenhauses der preußischen Armee, das von Friedrich II. in den Jahren 1747/48 errichtet wurde und in dem Kriegsinvaliden ihren Lebensabend verbringen konnten. Zum Invalidenhaus gehörten eine evangelische und eine katholische Kirche, aus der 1860 eine eigene Pfarrei entstand. Die Pfarrei umfasste neben den katholischen Invaliden auch die in den nördlichen Bezirken wohnenden Einwohner Berlins.
Nach den Befreiungskriegen 1813/15 fanden hier vor allem hohe Militärs ihre letzte Ruhestätte, ab Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts auch Zivilpersonen. Die Ausdehnung der Zivilgemeinde hatte zur Folge, dass von den insgesamt 30.000 Beisetzungen etwa ein Drittel dem Invalidenhaus und zwei Drittel der Zivilgemeinde zugeordnet werden mussten.
Auf dem heutigen Feld C des Invalidenfriedhofs entstand ein Ehrenplatz für Persönlichkeiten, die in den Befreiungskriegen eine herausragende Rolle gespielt hatten. Das Feld A blieb das bevorzugte Feld des Invalidenhauses, Feld B hingegen blieb über lange Zeit für die Zivilgemeinde reserviert. Da aufgrund der steigenden Beisetzungen Platzmangel bestand, erfolgte nach 1870 eine Erweiterung des Friedhofs.
Wichtige Persönlichkeiten der Berliner Stadtgeschichte haben auf dem Invalidenfriedhof ihre letzte Ruhestätte gefunden; einige Grabstellen sind erhalten. 1951 wurde der Invalidenfriedhof geschlossen und alle Grabstellen aus der Zeit vor 1925 eingeebnet.
Am 13. August 1961 dem Tag des Mauerbaus befanden sich auf dem Friedhof 3.000 Grabstellen; aufgrund seiner direkten Mauerlage erklärte man große Bereiche zum Grenzgebiet, die Felder E, F und G gehörten zum sogenannten Todestreifen. In den folgenden Jahren wurde der Invalidenfriedhof verwüstet, zahlreiche Grabdenkmäler und Gedenksteine abtransportiert, sodass heute nur noch 200 Grabstätten erhalten sind.
Der Invalidenfriedhof ist als eine Gedenkstätte zu betrachten; der ehemalige Todesstreifen und alle anderen Spuren der Zerstörung sollen auch in Zukunft zum mahnenden Gedenken erhalten bleiben. In den vergangenen Jahren sind einige charakteristische Friedhofsalleen wieder aufgepflanzt und auch erste bedeutende Gräber vollständig restauriert worden, davon auch einige in den Bereichen, die im Todesstreifen lagen.

The cemetery, which was established in 1748, was once part of the Prussian army's Invalid's House, which was built by Frederick II in 1747/48 and where war invalids could spend their twilight years. The Invalids' House included a Protestant and a Catholic church, from which a separate parish was created in 1860. In addition to the Catholic invalids, the parish also included the inhabitants of Berlin living in the northern districts.
After the Wars of Liberation in 1813/15, it was mainly high-ranking military personnel who found their final resting place here, followed by civilians from the end of the 19th century. The expansion of the civilian community meant that of the total of 30,000 burials, around one third had to be allocated to the Invalids' House and two thirds to the civilian community.
In what is now Field C of the Invalids' Cemetery, a place of honour was created for personalities who had played an outstanding role in the Wars of Liberation (Anti-Napoleonic Wars). Field A remained the favoured field of the Invalids' House, while Field B was reserved for the civilian community for a long time. As there was a lack of space due to the increasing number of burials, the cemetery was extended after 1870.
Important figures in Berlin's history have found their final resting place in the Invalids' Cemetery; some graves have been preserved. The Invalids' Cemetery was closed in 1951 and all graves from before 1925 were levelled.
On 13 August 1961, the day the Berlin Wall was built, there were 3,000 graves in the cemetery; due to its direct location on the Wall, large areas were declared a border area, with fields E, F and G belonging to the so-called death strip, a broad area between the outer Wall and the inner, "Hinterland" Wall, where all vegetation was extinguished and all graves where levelled. In the years that followed, the Invalids' Cemetery was vandalised and numerous grave monuments and memorial stones were removed, so that today only 200 graves remain.
The Invalids' Cemetery is to be regarded as a memorial site; the former death strip and all other traces of the destruction are to be preserved in the future as a reminder. In recent years, several characteristic cemetery avenues have been replanted and the first significant graves have been completely restored, including some in the areas that were located in the death strip.
