Ode, Hero of the Layered City - a photo on Flickriver

Even as the world changes, some still adhere to the old ways.

As a citizen of Prism, the Layered City, Ode has seen her fair share of injustice. While the upper more opulent layers of Prism are bathed sunlight, a glistening marvel of technological advancement and affluence, the lower layers such as Ode’s Layer 20 are exploited to keep the top running. In her childhood, Ode’s only view of the outside was through the lift shafts that carried citizens to and from the industrial undercities, and yet those faint glimpses of sunlight and sky were beacon’s of hope in Ode’s life. Her dream was to reach the fabled Layer 30, the ground layer, to see the outside world for the first time. As a teenager, Ode realized her dream, climbing out of the depths of Prism and finally seeing the sky.

She also found that Layer 30 was a city ruled by ECHO, a powerful crime network hiding in the shadow of Prism. After losing both her arms and legs in a turf war between ECHO and a rival network, Ode received cybernetic augmentations. During her rehabilitation, Ode picked up sword play to help improve her coordination with her new arms and legs.

After several years of watching the Prism government turn a blind eye to ECHO’s spread to the lower levels, Ode decided to take matters into her own hands. Her mission is to wipe out ECHO from Prism and reconnect the upper and lower layers with each other and the outside world. Her efforts have not gone unrecognized with the lower layers seeing her as a hero and the leaders of ECHO viewing her as an elusive menace.

Ode is kind yet stubborn. Her clever negotiating skills and propensity for thwarting ECHO’s efforts to spread have won many loyal allies in the undercities.

Ode’s cybernetic augmentations and Impulse Armor give her enhanced strength, agility, and senses. Her plasma blade is a deadly tool, and her stasis generator has saved her many times in a pinch.
