Turret - a photo on Flickriver

Turret

            Close to home.
Walk along the Grand Union Canal from Cooks Wharf to Red Lion Bridge.

I posted another image of this little tower a while back. I’ve had many suggestions as to what it might be. The most plausible is that there is an underground water conduit connecting the canal and nearby Tring Reservoirs. The reservoirs were built to keep the canal topped up. There is a (now disused) pumping station on the canal not far from here. The theory is that this is either for ventilation or it’s a disused maintenance shaft.
