Eurasian Marsh Frog - a photo on Flickriver

I've spent a lot of the weekend watching, listening to and photographing Marsh Frogs. They are so characterful, rowdy and photogenic that they are without doubt my favourite amphibians.

On Sunday the sun failed to break through and there was a fairly fresh wind, so it wasn't conducive for them to haul out and bask, which they love to do. Unfortunately, all activity was confined to the water where heads would appear tantalisingly amid the vegetation ... though always at a distance.

Thankfully this MF, ( + one other ) saved the day when they popped their heads out near the bank. Seriously loud calls helped me locate it eventually about two feet away. It was lurking with intent, waiting to catch any unsuspecting invertebrates within reach. 
Ironic then that if you look closely, you will see an insect exiting left along the water surface! A lucky escape.
