Yellow Rattle

My image shows the top of a Yellow Rattle plant just after the yellow flowers had emerged. A closer view shows the sides of a tiny bluish tooth protruding from the curved upper lip.

Yellow Rattle is a hemi-parasitic plant of grassy habitats that takes nutrients from grass roots. This action consequently restricts the growth of grasses, allowing other plants to gain a foothold.  Increasing the biodiversity of a grassland can only be a good thing. 

More and more meadows nowadays are being sown with Yellow Rattle to enrich the habitats for bees, insects, invertebrates, moths and butterflies. In turn, the meadows become more attractive to birds and mammals - (as well as the human eye of course!)
