Highlands NC Scenic Autumn Waterfall

            The beautiful Cullasaja Falls surrounded by autumn colors amidst Nantahala National Forest - this is always a treat to see as we visit the quaint town of Highlands in Western North Carolina.

The mighty Cullasaja River Gorge offers several beautiful cascades and waterfalls of which Cullasaja Falls is the last of the giants, dropping an impressive 250 feet from the top down to the base of the river below.

Taking the scenic route along Highway 64, the North Carolina Scenic Waterfall Byway of the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway, the road narrows quite a bit in some places as it snakes its way down the Eastern Continental Divide of the Southern Appalachians.

It has some truly prehistoric vistas, making me always ponder the what this area must have looked like before human civilization emerged. 

Have you ever visited Cullasaja Falls? Practice caution if you do, as there are limited designated pull offs and steep cliff sides along the gorge.
