Adelaide, South Australia. Flowering Wattle Shrub - Australasian Soldiers' Dardanelles 25th April 1915 Cenotaph

            The Centenary commemoration of the unveiling of this Cenotaph was held in Lundie Gardens, Adelaide, on 6 September 2015. Considered to be Australia's oldest memorial to the Gallipoli campaign.
The Cenotaph was unveiled by His Excellency the Governor-General Sir R. Munro Ferguson on Wattle Day 7 September
1915, assisted by Corporal Evans and Private H S Melville, two returned soldiers. It was the first South Australian World
War memorial. 
Approached through an archway marked "Wattle Grove 1915", the memorial was placed with a pergola within a stand of
wattle trees, in the South Park Lands. The wattle trees were of different varieties to ensure blooming throughout the year. 
The granite Cenotaph was sculpted with a rugged appearance denoting Gallipoli conditions experienced by soldiers in
Turkey. The marking "Australasian Soldiers Dardanelles 25 April 1915" remembered the first landing of Australian troops
on the Gallipoli Peninsula, (twenty five years later it was shifted to its present site, with a background of small wattle shrubs).
On the day white-clad women of the South Australian Branch of the Australian Wattle Day League sold fundraising wattle
sprays, buttons and badges on the streets of Adelaide, augmenting their funds for motor ambulances and other service
comforts. 
The police band played and a large crowd congregated for the ceremony - many of whom were related to the 410 enlistees who had already died of illness, wounds or were killed in action at Gallipoli. Most of those soldiers were South Australians: others were born interstate or overseas enlisting in South Australia while living there.
