            Glen Barr was the property of William Rankine: he was the son of John Rankine, founder of Strathalbyn. 
He and his wife Jane first built and lived in a small cottage from 1842, followed by large stables with hayloft above. By the 1850s the large homestead was built. During his absence in England in 1880 an upper floor was added. It was the centre for family gatherings, church services and town picnics. 
Many of the outbuildings are still in excellent condition and despite some modifications, much of Glen Barr is unchanged. 

Rankine died in 1882 but his family continued living in the house until 1923 when the homestead and the 35 acres around was sold to Richard Giles who lived there for a while and then leased out the property. 
Giles’ niece, Daphne Bowman, used the property from 1939. She turned the property into a Girl Guide Training Camp. Daphne Bowman also turned the stable hayloft into a chapel. The stables were converted for dining. Bowman was assisted by fellow youth worker Kathleen Bateman.
The property was used to support war efforts. Bowman purchased the property in 1945.

On 20 September 1876 Daphne Bowman and Kathleen Bateman donated the property to the Glen Barr Bowman and Bateman Foundation. 
It remains a campsite and is run almost entirely by volunteers. The formal gardens are currently undergoing restoration with plans to maintain and improve the homestead and its collections for future generations to enjoy. It has always celebrated its Scottish heritage and been a focus for youth-related activities, while maintaining a strong religious foundation.
