An American designed and imported accommodation unit: the only one remaining of 30, Torrens Island Quarantine Station, South Australia

Torrens Island Quarantine Station located on Torrens Island at the mouth of Adelaide’s Port River.
Torrens Island was used for quarantine from approximately 1855 to stop passengers bringing diseases such as smallpox into Adelaide. A permanent station was built in 1879.

The station was reached only by boat or barge: it provided its own power, water and sewerage until 1962, when a bridge was constructed from the mainland, enabling a power station to be built for the Electricity Trust of South Australia.

Torrens Island was run by the South Australian government until the proclamation of Commonwealth quarantine legislation in 1909 when it passed to the federal government. The area covered then was 551 acres and had accommodation for over 200 people.

During World War One (1914–1918) the station was used as an internment camp by the Australian Army.

Following the declaration by the World Health Organisation of the eradication of smallpox in 1979, the facility was formally closed as a human quarantine station. Most buildings were auctioned and removed. Some remaining buildings were entered in the South Australian Heritage Register in 1993.
