            OPENING OF THE CALTOWIE INSTITUTE.
Friday, January 30, was a gala, day in Caltowie, for after many months of waiting and anxiety on the part of the local committee the new institute was opened with all due ceremony, and in a very successful manner. Nearly all the shops in the township were closed in honour of the occasion, many of them being gaily be-decked, while the exterior of the institute itself was ornamented with evergreens and flowers. The institute consists of one large room, although provision has been made for the building of offices at the rear whenever the importance of the town justifies their erection. Every attention has been paid to the ventilation of the place, and light and air are admitted by means of three large windows on each side of the room.

OPENING OF THE SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL HALL (an addition to the front of preexisting Institute)
Great disappointment was felt when the news arrived on Monday that His Excellency the Governor would be unable, through indisposition, to lay the foundation stone and open the Soldiers' Memorial Hall on the following day. A telegram was immediately forwarded by the committee to the Premier asking him to convey their sympathy to His Excellency in his indisposition. Owing to the advanced state of the preparations all the engagements, excepting those in which His Excellency were to participate, were carried out yesterday, and were in every way successful. Sports for the children were carried out on the north park lands, and a memento bearing the photograph of the hall was given to each child present. 

A football match took place between Caltowie and Bundaleer during the afternoon. A public dinner was held, and more than £44 was realised. Later followed a concert, dance and supper.

The Governor has expressed his intention of visiting Caltowie and performing the ceremony as soon as circumstances permit.

*Opening day also saw the unveiling of a memorial tablet, erected by residents of Caltowie and District, in honour of the seventeen soldiers who enlisted from this district and fell in the war 1914–1919.

**The Library closed in 1974 and deeds for the hall were transferred from the Institutes Association to the Caltowie Memorial Inc, which has since formed with the Progress Association to form the Caltowie Memorial Hall and Progress Association. The hall and supper room have recently been re-roofed.
