St John's Lutheran Church built 1909 to replace a smaller church built 1891, Brinkworth South Australia

            BRINKWORTH LUTHERAN CHURCH

On April 14 the foundation stone of the new Lutheran Church at Brinkworth was laid by Pastor Hansen, assisted by Pastor Janzow. Pastor Hansen gave an address in German and Pastor Janzow spoke in English. In the cavity beneath the foundation stone a bottle was placed containing a history of the church, a report of the last synod at Hahndorf, daily and German newspapers, and several English coins. Hymns were rendered by the choir, under the direction of Mr F Paltridge. 

Pastor Hansen said the Lutherans first settled in Brinkworth district in 1874, and for some years were visited by ministers belonging to the Lutheran Synod of South Australia, services being held in private houses. In 1891 a church was built, but the congregation had grown too large, and rendered a larger church necessary. 

The site for the new church had been given as a gift by Mr T Coombe, of Brinkworth. The contractor for the building was Mr E E Kleeman, of Brinkworth. The church will be 50ft by 25ft by 16ft inside measurement. It will be entered by a porch and there will be a vestry at the rear. The following is on the marble foundation stone:—"Dieser Stein ward gelegt zur Ehre Gottes Durch. Pastor J E Hansen, April 14, 1909." 

Pastor Hansen laid the foundation stone of the first church 18 years ago, and has been the minister of the congregation for 21 years. 

[Cost] including furniture will be about £588. Stone and sand have been supplied by members of the congregation. A collection and proceeds of a tea amounted to £33. Ref: Kapunda Herald (SA)Friday 23 April 1909.

Brinkworth October 16
The newly-erected Lutheran Church was opened on Thursday. It ia a commodious building with vestry and porch. The church has a seating capacity of about 300, and was opened practically free of debt. A procession by the officiating pastors, the elders, trustees, choir, and members took place around the church. 
The contractor Mr E Kleemann then handed the key to Pastor Hansen, who performed the opening ceremony. The dedication ceremonies were conducted by Pastor Hansen , Pastors Riewaldt and Brauer assisting.

In the morning Pastor Riewaldt, of Lobethal, preached an impressive sermon in German. In the afternoon and evening English services were held. The afternoon service, conducted by Pastor Brauer, was largely attended by English residents. In the evening an English service was conducted by the pastor of the church. The choir contributed hymns and anthems, under Mr T C Paltridge. Collections for church purposes at all the services were liberally responded to.
