Packer Shareholders Meeting - a photo on Flickriver

Green Bay, Wisconsin is a city of a little over 100,000 people and is viewed as sort of a sports "dinosaur" as the only remaining small city in the big-city world of major league professional sports franchises. The Green Bay Packers began play in August 1919 when the Indian Packing Company agreed to sponsor a local pro football team under the direction of Earl (Curly) Lambeau. In 1921, the Packers were granted a membership in the new National Football League. The Packers are also unique in that they are the only community owned non-profit organization in the NFL. The corporation is governed by a board of directors and a seven-member executive committee. The Green Bay Packers organization has been kept viable by its shareholders — its unselfish fans who have supported the team financially through five stock sales: 1923, 1935, 1950, 1997 and 2011. Today, 352,427 people (representing 4,738,027 shares) are owners of the iconic franchise (including yours truly). Shareholders do not receive any dividend on their investment.

This selfie was taken with my GoPro Hero3 Black Edition camera during the recent Packers Shareholders Meeting that is held annually at legendary Lambeau Field in Green Bay. I'm wearing the number 66 jersey of linebacker Ray Nitschke who was my favorite player of the Vince Lombardi-era Packers. Ray was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 1978. In 1983, Nitschke's jersey number was the fourth to be officially retired by the Packers. Nitschke was voted to the NFL's 75th Anniversary Team in 1994. In 1997, the Packers' east practice field, across Oneida Street from Lambeau Field, was named in Nitschke's honor. Ray Nitschke died on March 8, 1998, at the age of 61.
