Utah - Arches NP: -- Balanced Rock. Majestically balances a huge rock on a rock pedestal

            In the middle of Arches National Park, near the Windows Section, Balanced Rock towers like the park's striking central object. Weighing 3,577 tons and 16.7 meters high, the boulder called "Ham Rock" seems to defy gravity. It sits slightly offset on a 22.4-meter-high rock pedestal of Navajo sandstone, which forms the base, and the Dewey Bridge Layer above it. Since the latter is a type of consolidated mudstone (siltstone) and thus more eroded than the Ham Rock formed of hard slickrock sandstone of the Estrada Formation, it has also been eroded to a greater extent over time, creating the unique rock formation that gives the supposedly very wobbly and fragile impression. Nevertheless, the colossus rests unimpressed by wind and weather because it offers some protection to the more vulnerable layer that supports it.
