Benson Hall - a photo on Flickriver

Benson Hall

A most unlikely combination on the main line, a Thompson 'B1' 4-6-0 and a Bulleid 'Merchant Navy' 4-6-2, but despite the wind direction and speed posing challenges, many photographers were attracted to the lineside attempting to capture some of the action. A visit to the ever-popular Docker viaduct location suggested that the wind direction was wrong, although the background vista was magnificent. With the northerly wind direction, the only option was to use a more north-south section of line, so Benson Hall near Kendal was chosen, although the background somewhat less dramatic. As the duo, probably a unique combination on the mainline post 1968 BR end of steam, round the curve past Benson Hall farm, the wind starts to do its worst on the exhaust, but just allowing a virtually exhaust-free 'Bulleid' in the optimum position for the overhead masts. 61306 'Mayflower' and 35018 'British India Line' working the 1Z86 07:10 London Euston to Carlisle RTC 'Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express' on Saturday 2nd February 2019.
Interestingly, these two classes of loco are no strangers to one another, although not working together in tandem, for B1s worked on the Southern Region in 1953 and could have 'met' at Stewarts Lane shed. On a personal note, the very first 'B1' that I saw was in June 1964, passing through Clapham Junction working a pigeon special from South Yorkshire to Lewes in Sussex!
