Leaving Medstead & Four Marks - a photo on Flickriver

            Two photos taken in the same general area just outside Medstead & Four Marks, at Grosvenor Bridge, but some 54 years apart!

(Upper photo) Class 205 'Hampshire & Berkshire' unit 1124 heads away from Medstead & Four Marks forming a truncated (due to engineering works) Alton to Alresford shuttle service on 15th February 1970. The Mid Hants Line between Alton and Winchester was closed by BR on 5th February 1973. After closure notices were published in December 1967, preservation enthusiasts formed a group to acquire part of the line, which reopened between Alresford and Ropley in April 1977. This section of the line between Medstead & Four Marks and Ropley reopened in May 1983.

(Lower photo) Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' Light Pacific 34070 'Manston' heading away from Medstead & Four Marks with passenger stock during a Matt and Warwick photographic charter on 24th February 2024. 34070 was withdrawn fro BR service in August 1964 from Exmouth Junction shed, probably in a similar external condition to its presentation almost sixty years on!
