Sea birds, Prince Leopold Island - a photo on Flickriver

Prince Leopold Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary, established in 1992, is situated in Lancaster Sound, ~SE of Beechey Island, at the top of Somerset Island by the entrance to Prince Regent Inlet in Nunavut. The sanctuary is one of the most important seabird breeding sites in the Arctic with large numbers of nesting thick-billed murre, northern fulmar, black-legged kittiwake and black guillemot. The breeding seabirds are present in the sanctuary in the Arctic summer and they head south shortly after breeding. The flat-topped island contains sandstone and limestone cliffs, ~250 metres high. The ledges and crevices formed from the eroding layers of sedimentary rock provide ideal nesting habitat for the variety of seabirds that flock to the island each summer to feed on the nutrient-rich waters.
Stormy conditions prevented us from approaching the nesting cliffs on the windward north side of the island; this is a view from a foggy sheltered bay on the leeward south side.
