Lothian 11 at Holy Corner, Edinburgh

            Lothian 11 is seen on a Service 36 working. This route wends its way from Gyle Centre to Ocean Terminal at Leith via Sighthill, Craiglockhart, Greenbank, Morningside, Tollcross, West End, Stockbridge and Bonnington. The vehicle is seen here waiting at the lights at Holy Corner where Morningside Road and Bruntsfield Place meet Colinton Road and Chamberlain Road. Holy Corner gets its name from the four churches in the vicinity of the road intersection. Ironically, the church in this picture is the only one of the four no longer in use as a church. Originally North Morningside UP Church and built in 1879, it had fallen out of use by the 1980s after the congregation merged with Morningside Congregational Church (now Morningside United Church) on the other side of Chamberlain Road. The churches working together then purchased North Morningside Church in October 1981 to set up a Holy Corner church centre to provide community services to all. The building was converted to better suit its new uses in two phases between 1994 ( by which time the name, Eric Liddell Centre, had been adopted) and 2000. The centre takes its name from the athlete and missionary, Eric Liddell (1902-1945), who represented Great Britain at the summer Olympics in Paris in 1924. He had once been a member at Morningside Congregational Church across the road and his Olympic story was featured in the 1981 film, “Chariots of Fire”, in which he was depicted by the late Edinburgh actor, Ian Charleson (1949-1990). The hybrid bus was new to Lothian in 2014.
