View from the Roof - a photo on Flickriver

View from the Roof

            This splendid shot of St Pauls Cathedral and the river Thames was taken from the roof of the Tate Modern in London. The Tate Modern is an interesting building, with a few surprises and even a serendipity moment for me, I could have spent hours in there. 

My serendipity moment came when I walked around a corner into a small gallery and saw a character from my childhood, Isaac Donaghy. Isaac was a second hand goods dealer in Byker which is part of Newcastle upon Tyne. Now here Isaac was on a canvas in the Tate Modern, it was surreal. I bet Isaac never thought in his life that a canvas of him standing outside of his second hand shop would be hanging in a world famous gallery in London and where else in the world I wonder. 

The photograph of Isaac along with others in the gallery were part of a collection taken around Byker in the seventies by Sirkaa-Liisa Konttinen. This young lady made the deprived area of Byker her home, having moved from Finland. She began to photograph the soon to be demolished homes where families shared a toilet at the bottom of a cold back yard and a bathroom was a tin bath in front of an open coal fire. More importantly she photographed the people that lived in these homes. Seeing this lady’s work in the Tate took me back in time over 40 years to when I was a child, I still miss this place to this day.

I believe I was meant to see these photographs as it was Sirkaa-Liisa Konttinen and later Jimmy Forsyth that really started me off taking photographs of the places I lived in the eighties and nineties. I later progressed to digital work and started to take photographs of pretty much anything of interest to me as you can probably tell from my work. 

I envy people like Sirkaa-Liisa Konttinen and Jimmy Forsyth as they have done something with their photography. If only I could find a way. Photography is such a joy to me and I wish I could be paid to do it for a living, even if this just meant paying my bills. I think this would be my idea of heaven.

It’s funny but I only went into the Tate Modern for this view from the roof. It’s strange where your love of photography can lead you at times. It’s also strange how fate works at times.
