The ‘Pelican of London’ at Aberystwyth

About the photograph.

I invited my best friend to come with me to Aberystwyth for a couple of nights. My reason for going there was to take photos of a rally motorsports event called Rali Ceredigion which took place on the 2nd and 3rd of September.

The reason I invited her was because she was born there, and figured it would be a nice chance for her to get to see her family there while I go and take the photos.

On the evening of Saturday the 2nd September, we went to the seafront to enjoy a nice night out, I chose to lighten the weight by leaving my Nikon DSLR behind at the hotel, I could always take some photos with my Apple iPhone 7 if I wanted to.

During a walk along the seafront, we spotted this tall ship anchored in the bay, and I took some photo of it. Didn’t expect to see something like that there.

I later found out that it is the training ship called the Pelican of London. For more details about this ship, see below.

The viewpoint was on Marine Terrace (Welsh: Glan y mor) about a stone’s throw from the Royal Pier Arcade, looking out towards west, with the setting sun behind the ship.
 
About the Pelican of London.

Point of note: While people often type out the names of ships in normal typeface if they want to, generally ship names are normally spelt out in italicized in print, being a trained touch-typist, I don’t mind having to spelt it out in italicize.

The Pelican of London was build in 1948, at Chantiers et Ateliers Augustin Normand, a French shipyard in Le Havre between 1850s to the early part of the 20th Century.

She was originally named simply as Pelican, and was an Arctic fishing trawler, and was used by a Norwegian company, until around 1968, when she was converted into a coaster named Kadett.

An ex-naval Commander named Graham Neilson bought her in 1995, and she was transformed into a tall ship, and renamed as Pelican of London. She had been in use since 2007 as a training ship, under various charities for the young people.

About Aberystwyth.

Aberystwyth is a Welsh coastal town and community in the county of Ceredigion, Wales, with a population of approximately up to about 16,000. It is located roughly more or less at the middle point along the west coast of Wales, and next to Cardigan Bay.

It was said that on a very clear day, you could make out the landmass of Ireland across the sea.

The earliest records of Aberystwyth are around early 1100s with the building of a fortress on a hill, on the south bank of the Ystwyth River, and this gave the town its name of Aberystwyth.

The fort was destroyed, and around the 1270s, a new castle was built in Aberystwyth until about 1649 when it was damaged during the English Civil War.

The building of the harbour had helped the town’s economic growth during late 18th and early 19th centuries, then around about the 1860s, a railway line reached the town, and this in turn, gave it a tourist boom.

It then became a popular holiday destination for most of the middle and working class people.

Aberystwyth University started life from around 1870s, and the National Library of Wales started from around 1900s.
