Cottages in Shining Cliff Woods Ambergate

            The main attraction here is both the abandoned Wire works and Oakhurst house, 
Oakhurst house was build in 1848 by Francis Hurt for his 4 unmarried daughters, they refused to live here and so a much grander house was built at Crich, Oakhurst house was built behind the Forge which Francis Hurt owned, the Forge was leased out and run by various Smiths and the house used as accommodation , the in 1876  The Richard Johnson and Nephew Wire company from Manchester bought the Forge and it became a wire works the house was retained by the Hurt family until 1888 when it was purchased by the Midland rail company who during their ownership extended it, the in 1893 it was purchased by Thawlis Johnson who once again extended it, 
Between 1924-1939 the house was used as a retreat for the local diocese, then after the war to help alleviate the housing shortage it was divided up into 12 flats, as over the years the house deteriorated depending on what you read the occupants in either the 70's or 80's were rehoused and it has been derelict ever since, In a last twist to the story in 1994 permission was granted to demolish this once fine building but this never happened and that permission has now expired , the wire works lies mostly abandoned although a small part is live but not making wire and various other estate building and the stables are leased as private accommodation
