Description
The Treak Cliff Cavern along with the Blue John mine is the only place in the word where Blue John stone can be found, Blue John being a banded form of fluorspar, Treak Cliff operations are thought to have taken place between 1745 and 1750, by the late 18th century blue john was much in demand for vases and columns most notably at Chatsworth house, 
During the 1st world war fluorspar was in great demand as flux in blast furnaces and during this time was mined purely for this purpose so subsequently a lot of good stone was lost during this period, commercial mining stopped in 1926, and the showcave being opened to the public in 1935, small amounts are still worked away from the showcave around half a ton a year primarily for small items and jewellery
