            La Boca is a neighborhood, or barrio of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It retains a strong Italian flavour, with many of its early settlers being from the city of Genoa.

As one of Buenos Aires's 48 barrios, La Boca is located in the city's south-east near its old port. The barrio of Barracas is to the west; San Telmo and Puerto Madero are to the north.

The neighborhood may derive its name from its location at 'La Boca' (the mouth) of the Riachuelo, as the Mantanza River is usually called.

In 1882, after a lengthy general strike, La Boca seceded from Argentina, and the rebels raised the Genoese flag, which was immediately torn down personally by then President Julio Argentino Roca.

Among sports fans, Boca is best known for being the home of world-renowned football club Boca Juniors. The club plays their home matches in the Estadio Alberto J. Armando, popularly known as La Bombonera (Spanish for "the bonbon box").

La Boca is a popular destination for tourists visiting Argentina, with its colourful houses and pedestrian street, the Caminito, where tango artists perform and tango-related memorabilia is sold. Other attractions include the La Ribera theatre, many tango clubs and Italian taverns. The actual area visited by tourists is only a few blocks long and has been built up for tourism very actively over the last few years. Outside this tourist area, it is a fairly poor neighborhood that has had many regular occurrences of petty crimes reported.

It has also been a centre for radical politics, having elected the first socialist member of the Argentine Congress (Alfredo Palacios in 1935) and was home to many demonstrations during the crisis of 2001.

As of 2016, the health of over 1,000 La Boca citizens is threatened by the pollution of the Matanza-Riachuelo River (which contains high levels of arsenic and lead due to centuries of unstopped pollution).

La Boca ist ein Stadtteil im Osten der argentinischen Hauptstadt Buenos Aires und das bekannteste der 48 Viertel der Stadt. Der Stadtteil hat gut 45.000 Einwohner (Stand von 2010) auf einer Fläche von 3,3 km². Das entspricht einer Bevölkerungsdichte von ca. 14.000 Einwohnern pro km².

La Boca liegt an der Einmündung des Riachuelo-Flusses in den Río de la Plata und hat daher auch seinen Namen (Boca = spanisch für „Mündung“). Im Westen von La Boca liegt Barracas, im Norden liegen Puerto Madero und San Telmo.

La Boca entstand Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts als Viertel italienischer Einwanderer, die meist als Industriearbeiter tätig waren. Viele der ersten Einwohner stammten aus der italienischen Hafenstadt Genua. 1882 löste sich La Boca nach einem langen Generalstreik von Argentinien los und die Rebellen hissten die genuesische Flagge, die aber sofort vom damaligen argentinischen Präsidenten Julio Argentino Roca wieder heruntergeholt wurde.

Heute ist La Boca populär bei den Touristen, auch wegen seiner originellen Häuser. Sie wurden aus dem Blech abgewrackter Schiffe gebaut und mit Schiffslack bunt bemalt. Viele Künstler preisen ihre Werke auf den Gehsteigen der Straße El Caminito (Der kleine Weg) an.

La Boca ist auch für das Fußballstadion La Bombonera (spanisch: „Pralinenschachtel“) des Fußballclubs Boca Juniors bekannt. Seine Farben (gelb und blau) verdankt es einem schwedischen Schiff, welches im Moment der Gründung vorbeifuhr.

Zu den weiteren Sehenswürdigkeiten des Viertels gehören das Theater La Ribera, die Tangosäle und die italienischen Restaurants. Auch im alltäglichen Leben ist der italienische Einfluss bis heute zu spüren.
