A SAFE HARBOUR By Angela Wilson - a photo on Flickriver

            On Armistice Day this year I visited the  Iolaire  Memorial which is two miles southeast of Stornoway on the notorious headland known as "The Beasts of Holm". On the Isle of Lewis.
The memorial commemorates the wrecking of the HMS Iolaire in the early hours of New Years day 1919 when she foundered in the stormy darkness.
205 men perished , of that number 174 were Lewis men and 7 Harris men. They had survived the war and were only yards from the shore, were there families had gathered to welcome them home and back to the islands.
The Scotsman reported:
"The villages of Lewis are like places of the dead. The homes of the island are full of lamentation - grief that cannot be comforted.
Scarcely a family has escaped the loss of a near blood relative.
Many have had sorrow heaped upon sorrow."
