The church dedicated to Saint Mary, documented in 1319, was built in Romanesque style in the 13th century. The defense tower, which also houses the belfry, was built in 1438. The present appearance of the church is due to the restoration works of the building in 1853, when all its southern and eastern parts were structurally modified.
A remarkable fact is the existence of a network of tunnels that start from under the altar and lead to 30 houses in the locality.
The religious building once had a rectangular fortified enclosure with two defense towers. Collapsed in 1877, the fortification was then demolished by the inhabitants in 1924 and again between 1953 and 1954. Currently inconspicuous traces of some walls can still be seen to the west of the church.
In 1996 important religious pieces of inestimable value, the altar, the bronze baptismal font, flags, two paintings from the First and Second World Wars and the organ were moved to Sibiu for protection.
