            The town of Șaroș on Târnave (Sibiu county) dates back to Antiquity and has been documented since 1282. In the first half of the 14th century, a Gothic church with three naves was built then destroyed by the Turkish hordes as well as the village.

The inhabitants rebuild and fortify the church now equipped with a single nave and in the shape of a cross. The construction was completed in 1422 and was consecrated by an envoy of the Pope of Rome, receiving the dedication of Saint Helena and Saint Nicholas. In 1483, the surrounding wall of the church, reinforced by five defense towers, began to be built. At the beginning of the 16th century, the bell tower was built and in the following century, the clock was built. The year 1605 was difficult for this locality: the village was attacked, looted and burnt down in the fighting against the rebel Stefan Bocskai. Until 1690, the village suffered terribly from wars which decimated the population reduced to only 5 families.

In 1772, the renovation of the ruined place of worship began: the ceiling was rebuilt and the master Johan Folbart of Sighisoara erected the Baroque altar in the choir of the church in 1774. A devastating fire covered the village in 1776 and burned 60 houses, ruining the roofs of the defense towers. These will be redone in the coming years. In 1808, the bell tower of the church was raised by another floor and received its current form.
