2023-06-19 15-50 Richis: Biserica evanghelica luterana fortificata

The fortified Evangelical Lutheran Church of Richiș was built in the second half of the 14th century. The monument is composed of a polygonal choir, with a sacristy to the north and an altar to the south. On the west side rises the body of the basilica, consisting of three naves, separated by massive octagonal pillars. The entrance is under a bell tower and the church has this strange aspect of all churches without a tower. Only part of the walls of the old fortress are still standing in their entirety. The altar was built in 1775 by Johann Folbarth from Sighisoara. The organ dates from 1788 and was made by the famous Johann Prause.
The gate tower to the west of the church, used today as a bell tower, still retains traces of the portcullis and the draft holes of the first four floors.
