'È un animale spazzino, si nutre esclusivamente di carogne e frammenti ossei di animali morti che localizza essenzialmente attraverso la vista. Più individui si riuniscono intorno alla stessa fonte di cibo e non sono rari i combattimenti tra grifoni per guadagnarsi il pasto.

Una volta individuata una carcassa, l’animale vi atterra vicino o sopra e, piegando il possente collo, inserisce la testa al suo interno fino in fondo alla gabbia toracica. Il becco, potente e leggermente ricurvo a uncino, è adatto a strappare la carne e a triturare le ossa.'
