Shenandoah Steam - a photo on Flickriver

Shenandoah Steam

Classic N&W streamliner No. 611 and I have become fairly well acquainted over the years. From Roanoke to Spencer to Manassas, I have encountered it in a number of different places and under a variety of circumstances. I have seen it under steam twice, but only arriving and departing from station stops. Watching it at speed out on the road, where it belongs, has been a long-time goal.

I was glad, then, that the Virginia Scenic Railway recently decided to host the venerable Class J and arrange for a series of mainline excursions. After the locomotive had spent several years in limited, low-key museum/tourist service in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, this seemed like just the opportunity I had been looking for. When a friend of mine offered to arrange a chase, I was quite ready to accept!

As can be seen, this impressive machine did not disappoint. Charging through the autumn-colored Virginia hills, it looked right at home.
