The Palace of Linares (Spanish: Palacio de Linares) is a palace located in Madrid, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1976.[citation needed]

In local legend, Linares Palace is haunted by the ghosts of the first Marquis de Linares and his daughter. According to the story, José de Murga y Reolid confessed to his father, the rich merchant Mateo Murga y Michelena, that he had fallen in love with a poor girl, Raimunda Osorio, the daughter of a cigarette seller. Horrified after learning the name of the girl, Mateo sent his son to London in order to make him forget her. The son resolved not to marry Raimunda until his father had died, and that is what happened.

When Mateo died, the young couple was finally married. José is supposed to have found a letter from his father in which he explained the reasons for his opposition to the relationship. According to his father, he had had an affair with a woman (Raimunda's mother) and had had a love child with her, the child being Raimunda, making her Jose's half sister. Jose and Raimunda, aware of the sin of incest they had unkmowingly committed, petitioned Pope Pius IX to grant a special papal decree called "Casti convivere", that is, permission to live together but in chastity. However, their love made them overlook their vow and they had a daughter, Raimundita. Guilty from the sin of her parents, Raimundita was either drowned or sealed up within the walls of the palace itself, and, according to legend, today her spirit paces the great halls of the old palace singing children's songs and calling to her parents.

Linares Palace is in a privileged location in Madrid. Its façades give onto the Plaza de Cibeles Square, Recoletos Avenue and Alcalá Street. Construction began on the building in 1873, by order of the Marquis of Linares. It is now home to the Casa de América, and its rooms serve as a venue for a range of cultural activities. This palace building is neo-Baroque in style and French in inspiration. Its main façade is outstanding, spectacular, with three entrance doors crowned by balconies. The interior features a wealth of decoration by such prestigious artists as Jerónimo Suñol, creator of the stunning marble banister on the staircase in the hall. Other important areas of the building include the ballrooms, the Hall of Mirrors, the chapel, Dolls’ House and the garden.
