The Plaza de la Magdalena owes its curious shape to the fact that in its origins, perhaps, it was a space intended to be a cloister. Its name comes from a now disappeared chapel, property of the Count of Amarante, located in the place where the square connects with that of Trigo.

The place before the square was a cemetery, as the medieval tombstones on one side remind us, leaning on the church of Santa María Madre. It is centered by a baroque cruise, one of the most beautiful in the city, which came to rest in this place from its original site, near the Puente Mayor. It was also an old fruit and vegetable market,

The square was a former canons' cemetery and even today it preserves that serene and calm atmosphere. It is one of the most beautiful in the city.

At the base of the beautiful Magdalena transept you can read the inscription: «For the city Yzo this transept and field being Corregidor the Ldo. Bernardo Patricio de Arce y Obregón. 1718». Made of granite, it has the figures of Christ and the Sorrowful Virgin on the cross. Four medallions surround the Virgin with symbols of the evangelists. It rests on three square steps.

In the Plaza de la Magdalena, the visitor's attention is drawn to the use of pebbles as pavement, a motif that is repeated in other squares and streets of Ourense. The use of this technique is related to the abundance of these songs in the Orense substrate, directly linked to the presence of rivers, which makes them the protagonists of the city's traditional paving. It was later recovered in the 20th century.
